Free Credit Score?
Yes, you read that correctly. Gone are the days where you have to print out a form, fill it out, get an envelope and stamp and post your credit report. Then sit back and wait 2-6 weeks. Nowadays you can get your credit report online FOR Free.
Some might think it’s crass to check your credit report in your underwear in the comfort of your own home, but I think that it’s just progress. Use your own discretion.
Why check your credit?
Seeing your credit score and report online is a wise thing to do regularly. As identity theft and credit breaches happen regularly, the best way to combat this is to monitor your credit for any suspect charges.
How often can you receive your full credit report?
Current federal law in the USA states that you can receive your full credit report from all 2 bureaus once a year for no charge. But the neat thing is that you can check your actual credit score daily if you want online.
The Big Three
The big three Credit agencies are as follows
- Equifax
https://www.equifax.com/personal/ - Transunion:
https://www.transunion.com/ - Experian:

A good idea is to make sure that you are on the correct site so check the website address exactly. Annual credit report is great as it allows you to see how you rank with the “big 3”.
What’s the deal with scores?
Credit scores won’t be the same at every agency as they may use different scoring methods. One agency might use the FICO system, others may use another method based on Vantages scores. Although the scores won’t be exactly the same, they also shouldn’t be more than a few points apart.
If you notice a discrepancy of more than 10 or 20 points then you should notify the agencies as it could be a bigger deal. Look for contact information from each bureau. It pays to try to correct your credit score when you see mistakes. Fixing these mistakes can even help you potentially boost your credit score!
Your Credit Card- Another way to score!
A lot of banks and credit card companies can also offer you a credit score rating as part of their services. This may not be the most accurate of ratings, but it will do in a pinch.
