Oil analysis refers to evaluating a machine's oil. Contaminants could suggest a mechanical issue affecting the equipment, suggesting it's likely to malfunction. Acoustic monitoring involves listening for sounds, such as leaks that indicate there's a mechanical issue. Many types of equipment make strange noises when parts are worn or damaged, and acoustic monitoring effectively identifies a potential equipment failure.

Vibration analysis involves monitoring the vibration rhythm produced by the equipment. Since equipment emits a specific vibration rhythm when operating optimally, a change in the vibration could suggest mechanical issues that need to be addressed. Infrared thermography involves using infrared cameras to identify parts warmer than usual, which typically indicates a problem with the equipment.

Companies use predictive maintenance software to determine when to schedule preventative maintenance. Suppose you run a media company and must ensure your reporters and editors have the resources needed to perform crucial tasks. If computers break down, reporters may lose research and article drafts, preventing them from meeting deadlines. Using predictive maintenance solutions ensures you anticipate potential maintenance issues before they occur and can schedule preventative maintenance when the computers aren't in use, so breakdowns don't disrupt work schedules.


Companies producing mechanical equipment, such as medical diagnostic tools, can use predictive maintenance software to prevent financial losses. Suppose your production team is under deadline to produce several diagnostic tools for hospitals and crucial equipment on your assembly line malfunctions. This disruption could cost your company thousands because you're paying for employees to work when they cannot complete tasks. Anticipating equipment failures and scheduling maintenance before the equipment malfunctions allow you to address mechanical issues between shifts, so the repairs don't impact your production staff. Consequently, you won't lose money paying for people to work when the equipment isn't available. Scheduling preventative maintenance also ensures you maintain your production schedule and don't miss delivery deadlines.
