The history of national corned beef Day

The dish of corned beef has a lot of meaning for the irish american people

Corned beef and cabbage is the meal they typically eat on St patrick’s day in america.

Corned beef and cabbage is an irish-american dish that was invented by Irish immigrants way back in the mid 1900s!  It helps them celebrate their homeland and heritage!

Typically it wasn’t as popular in Ireland itself.

What is corned beef?

The good news about you discovering this day is that in many places in the US, there can be sales on corned beef. It may be an awesome time to try it.

Corned beef is delicious. I don’t think you would want to eat it every day, but it makes a great departure from a lot of western food you might eat. Plus after you get the corned beef purchase out of the way, the rest of the ingredientes are so very common.

Corned beef is beef that is long cure in brine, seasonings and salt.  The corn part really means the coarse salt this is used in the process. The Brits developed the term “corned beef” back in the 1700s.  The dish usually consists of the corned beef (brisket or round roast) cooked with vegetables like cabbage, porators, onions and carrots.

They are stewed and boiled with the meat for a long time.

Piggy Piggies!

In Ireland however they were big fans of the hog.  Pigs were the most popular livestock crop in ireland.   So they have their own meal with pork.  Instead of corned beef, they went with salt pork or bacon.  Most of the beef was so pricey that only the rich could afford it. Also cows were more for dairy purposes thant for the steak.  Some of the early irish actually believed that cows were sacred.

This changed when the Brits took over. Beef became more popular. Corned beef became more popular as it was taxed less than other meats.

This meat would have been a lit more salty back in the day, most likely due to preservation necessitates.  This didn’t really change their love for pork and bacon being a staple of this dih.

Starting in the 1800s, North America started making their own corned beef. The irish stuff lost its lustre.  IT was wholly accepted by jewish americans who popularized it in delicatessen and jewish butcher shops.
The irish and jewish communities were often close in area, so there was a spillover. The irish Americans accepted the corned beef as their thing in the following centuries, and the rest as they say is history.
It got so big it became a national holiday along with St patrick’s day!
