Here’s the scenario. You are building a new website with the best practices that you can for SEO. A few weeks go by,  but nothings happening!  Are you doing it right? Is there an issue with indexing.  Today we will tackle the question: How long should SEO new website start working?

SEO- A little history

A few years back SEO was a little less complicated than it is today. A few years back and you could get page 1 SEO results in only a few weeks or months! And we are talking really powerful words that have billions of searches like investments or home insurance.  Crazy huh?

Fast forward to now. SEO is ultra competitive. Forget about the millions of websites, there are now over 1 billion blogs! THats billion with a B! Wow that’s 1/7th of the entire world!

So think about that, A lot of supply, and less demand. That means that Google can be very selective on who gets the top spots because there is so much to choose from. Lets see what SEO  is like in our modern time.

Keyword Research

Back a few years ago, keyword research wasn’t as tight as it is now. Now these keywords are very valuable.

Apart from all the older sites, now there are thousands or hundred of thousands of brand new websites built every day! It’s been estimated that there are close to 2 billion websites in existence today!

A few years back, you could focus on 5 or 10 keywords exculsivley, and the majority of your traffic would be funneled with theses.

These words would be very generic, so they would be easier to rank for.

And now? Although this depends on your site, you want to have a list of 40 to over 100 keywords to rank effectively.

Its also a requirement to have each website page to  be ranked solely with just one keyword minimum. But typically the recommendation for each page is more like 4 or 5 keywords.

Content change

It used to be that you could write an article and implement the same keyword a bunch of times tand google would rank you automatically.

It would be based on keyword density and how many times you used that keyword on the page.

Im sure that you saw those weird articles that stuffed a ton of the same word into the article as they could. This created a strange user experience, so Google is less focused on this tactic.

Google continues to advance year after year, and wants different things now.

Keyword stuffing- No way Jose

Long gones are the days of cheap keyword stuffing articles. These days its a must to create valuable content that people want to read. Google is now trying to showcase good quality content. So keyword stuffing has gone the way of the dodo.

Now google is bright enough to read your content and can figure out the keywords much better. Google is like a big word dictionary, its stores words as information. Its a good idea to include keyword tags, but google is a lot more advanced that previous years.

Google goals

So with all this supply at their fingertips, google is getting wiser to only show content that is original, valuable and current.  As most search topics really aer actual questions or queries. Sure it may not have a question mark, but it might just be an answer search.

So look at it like this:

If a questions or search term is asked and your content or site does provide an answer, google will like you.  If you fail at this, google can shun you.

SEO New Website: Word count- does it matter?

There is  a common fallacy out there that you can choose a keyword and then write a bunch or content- say 1000 or 1500 words, and you will be golden on google. This isnt really true.

More than word count, your content needs to be stellar!

What really matters is if you can provide to the user what hey want in an efficient way.
So your content can vary, the key is that who can be the most concise and serve the searches the best. This is the best strategy for creating solid content that google will keep around in the long term.

The straight goods on ranking times.

So back to our main question:

How long does a new website really take to rank in SEO?

The answer is……..
There is no exact answer. In the wide world of the internet, there are too many variables to provide a blanket answer.

Some studies suggest that a good rule of thumb is around 4 to 6 months. But Keep in mind that SEO varies as much as anything in our world today. Your industry and niche play a major part in how this all works.

One way to look at it is that SEO is simpler and more instant when you try to rate for a service in one small area than to rank for a major industry in a country.

So what’s the prognosis?

Based on all the information out there in our world today, a sweeping generalization is that 6 months is the most common time listed for SEO to start working. This means both link building and on page SEO.

So what does this mean?

This doesnt mean top of page 1 or even page 1 SEO ranking. Rather it means that 6 months is a good time to test and see if you are getting some momentum.

A better way to get traction quicker is to focus your keywords on long tailed keywords instead of shorter and more general terms.

The skinny on best SEO factors to rank quicker:

This is based on basic site health. Is your site up to snuff?
Do you have a secure site that the google crawlers can easily find?
Is your robots.txt file doing its job of blocking and allowing the correct pages?

Have you submitted a current sitemap to google so that i can crawl your pages easier?

Does your website load quickly? Believe it or not this can also help to boost your rankings!

A handy tool is google page speed:

This can help you see how your site rates in desktop and mobile searches. These speed times also play a part in effecting how google convert as well.

Mobile- the wave of the future

There is a stat that says that mobile searches now make up close to half of all internet searches today? Thats why its becoming a way bigger deal to make sure that your site looks great on mobile devices. If it does, google can help rank you better.

Content is still king

Google is now valuing great content that is original a lot higher than the same old same old dribble.

Google wants original and unique content that hasnt been done a millione times previously.

Google values new content a lot more than old repackaged articles. So get bold and write some new stuff. Write articles with a twist!

This might seem like a bummer, but even in our modern times, there is always something new to learn and create content for.

SEO: Backlinks and you

Its still important to get links back from good ranking sites.

IT works better if the sites that link are related to your niche topic.

Is your content, products or services worth linking to?

Its is original and fresh enough?

SEO New Website: Social signals

This one is weird. Although google states there is no direct corelation between social signals and page rankings, its eems like the better social signals of a page the higher it rates.

Google is getting better and weeding out the pages that humans like and value, not robots.

So if people fo like a site or page, they usually share, link or like it.

Linking and sharing are very related.

Local business

Google wants to promote legitimate businesses with information that’s easy to locate. This means that you should have your phone, website, address etc published. It also means that your google my business is active and current.  Other areas that matter are google reviews, a BBB page. The idea is the more reviews, the better!

Conclusion:

“Do unto others as you want them to do unto you.”
The golden rule, the idea is that you should absolutely think of the user first when you are creating content and optimizign SEO. This doesnt mean to toss SEO out the window, but instead think of your customers first.
