What Is a Demat Account?

A Demat account, also known as a Dematerialized account, is an electronic account that allows you to retain shares and assets. Shares are purchased and held in a Demat account during online trading, allowing users to trade swiftly. A Demat account is a single account that holds all of an individual’s investments in shares/stocks, government securities, exchange-traded funds, bonds and mutual funds.

Terms you should be familiar with before opening a Demat account:

  1. DIS- Delivery Instruction Slip- It is like a cheque but essentially for your Demat account transactions. It is used to facilitate and authorize the sale or transfer of shares from one account to another.

  1. NSDL - (National Securities Depository Limited) & CDSL - (Central Depository Services Limited) The market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) established the CSDL and NSDL as national share depositories. They are the custodians of your stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and other investments.

The only difference between NSDL and CDSL is that the National Stock Exchange (NSE) is the primary functioning market for NSDL, whereas the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) is the critical operating market for CDSL.

  1. Dematerialization and Rematerialisation

Dematerialization refers to the process of converting physical share and debenture certificates into electronic versions.

Any Investor who has previously converted securities and debenture certificates to electronic formats now has the opportunity to convert them back to physical form, and this process is called Rematerialisation.

  1. Nomination

In the event of an investor’s death, all of the investor’s assets will be transferred to a nominee named when the Demat account was opened. One Demat account can have a maximum of 3 nominees.

  1. Depository Participant (DP)

A depository participant is a depository’s agent or licensed stockbroker.

Why should you think of Opening a Demat account

  1. Lower risks

Physical securities are prone to theft, losses and damages. Furthermore, faulty deliveries and forged or counterfeit securities add to the risk of holding physical securities. The creation of a Demat account eliminates all these risks.

  1. Easily accessible or easy holding and single accounts for all

Physical certificate upkeep is a time-consuming undertaking. Additionally, maintaining track of performance is an additional burden. Demat account users can easily track all their investments by consolidating them into a single account.

  1. Odd lots

Buying and Selling of actual certificates were limited to the quantities stated. It was also not possible to work with odd lots or single securities. This is no longer a problem because of the Demat account.

  1. Reduced costs

Physical certificates came with a slew of different prices, including stamp duty, handling fees and other charges. With a Demat account, all these additional charges are fully avoided.

  1. Reduced time or Instant transactions

The time necessary to complete a transaction is decreased because of the absence of paperwork documentation. As a result, the account holder may purchase and sell more securities in less time and with a higher efficiency because the time required has been decreased.

Demat accounts are easy to use, hassle-free and immensely beneficial. They are essential for financial planning in today’s world.

  1. Speedy E-Facilities

Users can transmit instruction slips to the National Securities Depository Limited(NSDL) online rather than physically presenting them to the Depository participant (DP). As a result, the method is more convenient and time-efficient.

  1. Avail loan against securities

A number of banks, financial institutions and lenders provide loans secured by securities kept in the borrower’s Demat account. Demat account holders can borrow money using these assets as securities.

  1. Corporate Benefits

These benefits are immediately available to Demat account holders if the firm pays dividends, refunds or interests to their investors. Furthermore, corporate acts such as bonus issuance, right shares and stock splits are instantly updated in the Demat account of all shareholders.

Features of a Demat account

  1. Secure transactions - Investors can move their securities using a delivery instruction slip. These slips make purchasing and selling stocks more efficient, convenient and safe. Investors can use these slips to offer all of the information needed for a transaction to run smoothly. As demat account transfers are electronic, it lowers the risk of theft, loss and unfair trading.

  1. Freezing demat accounts - A Demat account holder can freeze a specific type or quantity of securities in the account. He or she can also choose to put the demat account on hold for a set time period. This is frequently done to avoid unexpected debit or credit into the account. By doing so, the holder prevents any money or funds from being transferred into the demat account.

  1. Multiple accessing options - You can access your demat account in a variety of ways for ease of use. A computer, a smartphone,or any other smart device can be used to access your demat account. For a better user experience, all you need is a decent internet connection.
