Meaning

History

The Prophet said to his companions, “Is it difficult for any of you to recite one-third of the Qur’an in one night?” This suggestion was difficult for them because they said, “Who among us has the power to undertake to do so, O Allah’s Messenger?” The prophet replied: “Allah (the) One, the Self-Sufficient Master Whom all creatures need. (Surat Ikhlas 112.1 – to the End) is capable of one-third of the Qur’an.”

The Theme 

The religion of Islam presented within the Qur’an is predicated on the subsequent three doctrines:

• Tawheed (belief within the Oneness of Allah)

Verse 1: [Say (O Muhammad): “He is Allah, (the) One.]

Allah is that the One, the Singular, Who has no peer, no assistant, no rival, no equal and none admire Him. The word “Al-Ahad” (the One) can not be used for anyone in affirmation except Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, because He's perfect altogether of His attributes and actions. 

Verse 2: [“Allah-us-Samad (Allah – the Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need.)]

“As-Samad” is the Master whose control is complete.

Verse 3: [“He begets not, nor was He begotten.]

Allah is exalted above having any parent, spouse, or child. Allah doesn't give birth, nor was He born, because there's nothing that's born except that it'll die, and there's nothing that dies except that it leaves behind inheritance, and indeed Allah doesn't die and He doesn't leave behind any inheritance. 

There are some ignorant people who believe that Allah has begotten a son, for instance, the Jews believe that ‘Uzair (Ezra) was the son of Allah and also the Christians believe that ‘Isa (Jesus Christ) was the son of Allah. Allah Himself refutes such claims by His saying (interpretation of the meaning): “And they say: “The Most Gracious (Allah) has begotten a son (or children).” Glory to Him! They [whom they call children of Allah i.e. the angels, ‘Isa (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary), ‘Uzair (Ezra), etc.], are but honored slaves.

Verse 4: [“And there is none co-equal or comparable to Him.”]

There is nothing at all like Allah. Allah says elsewhere in the Qur’an (interpretation of the meaning):

“There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.” [Al Qur’an 42:11]
