Understanding Regionalism

Regionalism can be said to be defined as a state of extreme loyalty and faithfulness to one’s own region that may result in undermining the interest of the nation at large or of the state which has that region as its part.

 A region may comprise a group of people living in a particular area. These people have, over time acquired certain distinctive features because of various factors operating in their area.

 These factors may be language of that particular region, the religion, the age-old customs practiced by the people in the region, historical traditions, the geography and topography of the region as well as the social, economic and political stages of development in the region. Based on these factors the region may be divided into four types:

• Historic region  This type of region contains people having a common historic experience which influences their thinking and behavior pattern.

• Linguistic region  As the name suggests, such regions have people speaking a common language thus having a common linguistic background.

• Cultural region  Such regions are based on the different cultural practices that people have been witnessing since ages. 

• Structural region  These regions are based on various structural principles like that of caste, ethnicity and the like. 

Regionalism finds its mention in various contexts. Governments may use this concept for proper governance in their country. They may have a system of decentralization of administration based on regional basis. Regionalism may also result in political counter movement to get a greater autonomy for an individual or a group of individuals.

• Regionalism offers a balanced regional development in the area. Since people love the region they belong to, they are more likely to be involved in its development plans. 
• These regional developments affect the larger goal of nation building which can be effectively achieved if the regional development goals are achieved. 
• Once you go ahead to witness the demands of regions of any country, they are mostly within the boundaries of the constitutional framework. Thus, it again offers a great opportunity for the development of the country.
• The socio-cultural diversity of different regions in a country is respected. 

Along with these positives, the negatives of regional development are:

• There are several internal issues because of the development of these regions in the country.
• These internal security issues pose a serious threat to the development and unity of the nation.
• It usually happens that the framing of the national policies is majorly affected and dominated by the regional demands. 
• Regionalism may result in violence and this violence may have a great impact and disturbance to the society.
