Tips on Saving up for a Luxury Accessory

These days, you need to be smart with your finances. You can’t spend too much on superfluous stuff that might compromise your financial future. After all, when the going gets rough, you want to be prepared money-wise. The worst thing that can happen is you realizing you splurged too much and you don’t have enough to pay for something important in every sense of the word.

Still, it’s understandable if you hanker for a luxury item from time to time. You work hard and you need to reward yourself. You need to enjoy the money that you make. That is while ensuring that your finances don’t suffer in the long run.

Thankfully, there are ways to save up for that luxury item of your dreams. Here are some tips to get you on your way to making that purchase you long for.

Know what you want

Chances are you don’t often splurge on consumer goods. When you do, it should be on something you know you won’t regret. Here, it’s important to consider both form and function. The luxury item you should buy needs to look good, but it should also be practical.

For example, if you’re eyeing a pair of designer shoes, make sure you can wear them. No matter how cool they look or how trendy they are, if they will torture your feet and make you miserable, they’re not worth the price. They won’t be worth all those months of saving up.

Set a timeline for saving up

If you’re handling your finances responsibly, chances are you are already saving for eventualities like your retirement, while also paying for health insurance and other expenditures that afford you peace of mind. You should not touch the budget you allot for those things just because you feel like owning a high-end bike now.

Instead, set a timeline for saving up for that bike you’re eager to ride and flex on the road. A timeline is important because it makes your goal clear and definite. You will know how much you need to put away from your monthly paycheck.

Compartmentalize

Your expenses can be divided into categories. Think of this as compartmentalizing money matters. Ideally, you have accounts dedicated to specifically planned expenditures. This way, you won’t make the mistake of dipping into money for a purchase intended for something else.

For instance, if you’re an avid traveler, it’s best to have a savings account devoted to your next adventure. Meanwhile, if you’re planning to purchase a designer dress to wear to your company’s year-end party, make a separate account for that too.

It does not have to be a legit account with a bank. This account can be in the form of a shoebox tucked away under the bed. The goal is to not have all of your savings in one basket.

Favor quality over quantity

It’s easy to get tempted to buy more of the same stuff. We, humans, tend to acquire more to feel good. But more often than not, that is not the case. You can have just one of something quite great, and it’s more than enough.

Consider designer handbags. Having one in your closet is an excellent investment. Unlike cheaper bags, a designer handbag will last you a long time. It can even turn into an heirloom you pass to your daughter. That’s not something you can say about two bags you bought for the price of one. That will most likely last you only a couple of seasons.

Practice restraint

Even if you’re eyeing an expensive purchase, and thus you’re saving up, you will still get tempted to buy stuff every time you find yourself at the mall or staring at your laptop screen’s algorithmic ads. This is where restraint comes in. And to perfect restraint, you need practice.

Say no to that cute necklace you see online. Or that second cup of Starbucks coffee you usually order at the tail-end hours of your shift at work. These seemingly simple decisions will go a long way to ensuring that you get to save up fast for that luxury item you want to take home.

Timing is key

So you’ve saved enough to afford that high-end laptop you feel will make you a happier and well-adjusted person. Should you buy now or wait a little longer? Well, if you want to save some money, the answer’s the latter. Chances are, that laptop will be sold at a cheaper price come Black Friday or Cyber Monday. If you still have a functioning laptop, it’s in your best interest to postpone the purchase. You get to maximize your savings this way.

Refrain from using credit cards for luxury items

Saving up for a luxury item gives you ample time to think your decision through. With a credit card, you’re more susceptible to impulse buying. And that propensity can easily get your finances out of whack.

Think timeless

If you’re thinking of rewarding yourself with a luxury item but you don’t have anything specific in mind, think of something timeless. For example, a vintage watch. This purchase equates to investment. It will neither go out of fashion nor depreciate.

Hankering for a luxury item is not a financial sabotage per se. If you work hard and earn more than enough for your basic needs, feel free to consider buying a vintage watch or a designer bag or whatever it is you fancy.

The key is not to spend everything you have in the bank on a single purchase. The key is to devote enough time to save up. Once you know you can afford to take home that thing you’ve been dreaming of without compromising your financial health, by all means, go out and shop.

And once you’re out there in a brick-and-mortar shop or an e-commerce portal, make sure you’re doing business with a seller you can trust. Remember that you are spending significant money. There’s no room for error. So research the seller you want to do business with. Read customer reviews. Peruse product details and sale terms. You will be splurging money. It won’t hurt if you splurged time, too.
