Why White Marble Still Rules the World of Architecture?
Rating :
All over the world, white marble is used to give an air of power and opulence. From Ancient Greece's Parthenon to Italy's Duomo di Milano, it has been a symbol of beauty for centuries. Its timeless appeal has only increased as globalization brings different cultures together- from China's Forbidden City to India's Taj Mahal.
It looks like we're still in love with the idea of conquering nature; we may be using steel and glass now instead of marble but the message remains: "We can build something better than this." But why? What makes these buildings so special?
The answer: White marble is not just aesthetically pleasing- it also fulfills practical purposes such as providing insulation and being easy to clean.
The following are three famous buildings where you can find white marble in abundance:
1) Taj Mahal, India- Agra
It was named " the teardrop on the cheek of time" by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore who visited it for the first time when he was sixty years old and wrote a poem about it. The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It was completed in 1648 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
White marble from Rajasthan was used for the structure whereas the inlaid decoration was done using semi-precious stones. The buildings are symmetrical except for the central dome which stands out slightly from the rest of the complex.
2) Forbidden City, China- Beijing
Built-in 1406 to1420, this 980,000 square meters walled compound was once home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The buildings were painted in red and gold, the roofs tiled with green glazed porcelain tiles.
Weathering has changed the color of the buildings to shades of unpainted yellow giving it a serene look that is accentuated by the surrounding gardens. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The complex consists of three enclosing outer walls and a series of buildings inside. The buildings were built using large slabs of white marble on the exterior and interior surfaces. All 452 slabs remain in good condition today.
3) Parthenon, Greece- Athens
Built between 447 BC to 432 BC, the Parthenon is a temple that was built in honor of the Greek goddess Athena. It is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece and since 1930, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This temple served not only for religious purposes but also as a treasury and a place where the most valuable treasures of Athens were stored such as gold, silver, jewelry, and sculptures. It was eventually destroyed by the Romans in 146 AD .
White marble was used for its construction, although it is believed that the building was originally covered with sheets of gold. As time passed, it has been replaced with a thin film of stone giving an ethereal quality to its appearance.
