Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has conceded for the West Bengal elections on Friday and has announced to contest from Nandigram this time. This is happening for the first time in thirty years, when Mamata Banerjee is not contesting from her assembly seat Bhawanipur.
Mamta Banerjee was a Member of Parliament from Kolkata (South) from 1991-2011, which includes Bhawanipur and from 2011 she was an MLA from Bhawanipur. Mamta Banerjee said that if the need arises, I will contest elections from Bhawanipur but I will not contest it from here or fight it, Bhawanipur will always be in my fist.
State Energy Minister Sowanadev Chattopadhyay will contest from Bhawanipur. Mamta Banerjee further said that I will always stay here and keep watch. Let me tell you that three decades ago in 1991, Mamta Banerjee was attacked, she was leading a Congress rally during that time. During this, Mamta Banerjee had a head injury.
Mamta Banerjee said that I had campaigned with injured head with broken head. People have always trusted me. I fought and won the election eight times from here. Mamata Banerjee said when she removed Sowanadev Chattopadhyay from Bhawanipur that this is her home, she used to play in the local club here.
Bhawanipur has contributed a lot to Mamata Banerjee's political journey. It is not easy to become a Chief Minister of Bengal from a Union Minister. The way the BJP has waved after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, it has also affected the vote pattern. Between 2011-14, BJP's votes ranged from 5,078 to 47,465.
Unfortunately, in the three elections in which Mamata Banerjee contested, the vote-share began to fall. For example, in the 2011 by-election, Mamata Banerjee got 77 percent of the votes, while in 2016, the vote share fell by 48 percent and TMC was ahead of only 3,168 votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
