Rishabh Pant's maiden hundred on residence soil, linked with a winning fifty from Washington Sundar, put India in command of the last Test. Their 113-run partnership wrested the initiative from the visitors who had certainly gained the upper hand during the first two sessions on day two.
At 153/6 at the tea rest, the visitants were favorites for a first-innings lead, but it was a masterclass from Pant in adapting to the demands of conditions and doubtful match situation. Looking to repair, the runs initially came in prepared form, but then he really got under the English coats as they tired.
Suddenly great was his shot-making on the second new ball, including a six-over-square leg to bring up his century. And within a focus of minutes, India's lead expanded beyond 50 and hit the wind out of England's sail.
Even as Pant departed, Sundar held firm. And he showed his mettle with the bat yet again with sure feet move, shot selection, and clarity. At ends, he continued unbeaten on fifty.
Although, it was England who had begun the second day quickly. Having exhausted up the runs in the first hour, they dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, and Ajinkya Rahane in the second.
However, Rohit Sharma endured till lunch to avoid further damage. However presently as he was nearing his fifty, Stokes confined him lbw. And Ashwin's departure soon after meant the Test still hung in the balance at tea. It was covering to Pant and Sundar thereafter.
The scorecard: India 294/7 (Pant 101, Sundar 60 not out, Anderson 3/40) found England 205 by 89 runs.
