Blockchain for Logistics: Revolutionizing the Industry
Rating :
Blockchain-
Blockchain, also called (distributed ledger technology) is an immutable chain of records called blocks that contains data, transactions and files. It is a distributed ledger.
It is run by people who use it. It is peer-to-peer communication. It has computer nodes that are used to verify transactions.
Blockchain technology is a decentralized digital ledger that was invented by Satoshi Makamata in 2008 for use in cryptocurrency bitcoin. Blockchain allows the computer to record information. Bitcoin is the first blockchain application.
The blockchain sector is one of the fastest-growing sectors. It is the fastest, and no need to rely on third parties. Modifying the data in one block is impossible as blocks are linked together.
It works on three principles:-
Transparency, Decentralization and security.
The Logistics Industry-
Logistics is a part of supply chain management. The logistics industry is vast and is very complex. Products are shipped, stored in warehouses and passes through customs which is complex, time consuming and very costly.
Logistics is currently facing change which means there will be more challenges, and these challenges could be met by some revolutions and evolutions. So Blockchain for logistics could be a revolutionary step.
It leads to more transparency and efficiency. From moving finished goods to goods-in-transit and the final destination, the status of every transaction will update for everyone and everywhere by Blockchain. The logistics industry is currently undergoing a transformative stage. Presently the supply chain system is outdated and unable to match the pace of changes happening all over the globe. The speed of the existing supply chain is extremely slow, and Fraud always exists. Lack of trust and insecurity of data are major problems that have been observed.
Blockchain for logistics-
Introduction-
In the complex scenario of shipping goods, lots of parties are involved, transactions get saved, bills are prepared, proof of delivery n much more. It creates a transparent and efficient system for managing transactions involved in logistics and the supply chain. It allows users to trace the products from start to end. With the implementation of blockchain technology in the supply chain, products can be tracked and traced throughout their entire process. Google, Amazon, Walmart, nestle n many more are now using Blockchain for logistics. Any business can use the technology according to its needs. According to one estimate from the world economic forum, reducing supply chain barriers to trade could increase global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by nearly 5% and global trade by 15%. Achieving new efficiencies in the logistics industry is likely to have an impact on the global economy.
Benefits of Blockchain for logistics-
Increased transparency- It helps to break down walls and hurdles between different parts of the supply chain, which makes it transparent.
Faster Payments- Blockchain technology keep track of all transactions and in a simple manner.
Reduced Expenses- It is not only transparent and efficient, but it can also reduce paperwork and thus reduce expenses.
Detect Fraud and prevent theft- Every transaction that occurs is visible to everyone, so it will be easier to Detect Fraud. Also, there will be no risk of cargo fraud.
Highly secured and traceable- The data record cannot be altered as highly secured and highly traceable.
Automated Certification- It has automatic operations by computerizing the entire process through certified smart contracts. Smart contracts help eliminate intermediaries, and they will also help speed up the process of transferring valuables. Of the first startups that used smart contracts in the logistics industry is Shipchain.
Cost Saving- It is cost-saving as it eliminates the middleman.
Blockchain, along with AI, is also working under robotics programming language to shape the future of robotics.
Challenges-
It requires a lot of groundwork- To gain a better understanding of the technology, IT managers and developers are needed. One can avoid this problem by collaborating with other companies. For Example- Hyperledger is currently working with more than 250 companies like TKI Dinalog Dutch Institute for Advanced Logistics Project.
It Is Complex- It is Complex due to handling of hundreds of thousands of transactions. Though they are efficient, they are complex too. It stores every transaction in a distributed ledger.
Trust on Technology- Managing trust is one of the most difficult areas to maintain and establish while dealing with a group of trading partners. So trust in technology is essential.
Updating inaccurate records- Blockchain data stores are immutable, which means it is impossible to update an inaccurate record.
Technical Challenges- There is a private key and a public key for controlling access to the information. If in case the private key gets damaged, then Blockchain is lost.
Costly- Developing and maintaining software and hardware to run blockchain technology can be expensive, and in addition, qualified people to run blockchain technology can be costly for small businesses.
Conclusion -
Blockchain is new and seems confusing on the surface. To reap the award it offers, movement with blockchain education and open-minded consideration is necessary. All the practical and legal hurdles can be resolved with blockchain development and education. At first, logistics companies are required to educate themselves and then digitize their data. There are organizations like Blockchain in transportation alliance ( BITA) working to bring a common framework across the country. Some of its members include UPS, SAP, FEDEX. Getting everyone on the same page can be challenging. Blockchain technology is a revolutionary technology. It will make life simpler, changing the way personal information is stored. Blockchain creates an immutable record of every transaction; this makes Fraud, cheat, data theft impossible. Despite many advantages, the implementation of Blockchain in the logistics industry still requires a professional approach.
Blockchains' increasing innovations can create new uses of technology and better growth opportunities in the logistics industry. Becoming familiar with Blockchain to understand the basics is the need to meet the challenges of the coming time. By joining forces, we can create the right foundations for successful industry adoption of Blockchain, and we can ultimately unlock new values in logistics. It is better to use the blockchain technology in the logistic industry as it is time saving and cost effective.
