When the motor car was first developed, it was said that the planet has now become cleaner. This was due to the fact that before the dawn of the internal combustion engine animals were the primary source of all transportation. Whether it was horse drawn carriages for the super-rich and the royalty or simple animals being rode by people.
The main drawback of this means was that because the animals needed to eat to be able to work, they also needed to poop. The animal droppings were a major source of waste that was produced in those days. Another major problem was that when the animals died, they were extremely hard work to be put away in the proper manner.
When the internal combustion engine was developed, it led to the invention of motor cars. The people rejoiced and exclaimed that the planet has become cleaner. Little did they know that in a couple hundred years this would become one of the biggest problems in the history of mankind.
With the passage of time, there have been the inventions of many alternatives to combat carbon emissions. One of these alternatives is the use of electric cars. It seems wonderful and amazing at first glance, but it too has its own drawbacks. Let us explore in this article what they are and why the replacement of traditional cars by electric cars is not in the near future.
Not Enough Electric Power Generation
The fuel that the electric cars require is electricity, whose production is costly as well as not totally green. It is a fact that electricity is still and expensive commodity in many countries. It is also a fact that electricity is very precious in some countries even today. Most of the developing countries of the world still do not have enough power generation to fulfil their requirements.
Moreover, there is also still a major portion of electric power that comes from burning fossil fuels. Even in many developed countries, there are still power generation units running on fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas. It is true that the green alternatives like solar energy, wind energy hydro energy etc. are in use, but their use is still limited.
Major portion of the world’s electric power is still generated at the cost of carbon emissions. Considering this, there is still a substantial amount of time left before the whole world switches to electric cars. The use of electric cars requires a significant amount of electric power generation. If that portion is still met the traditional way, then it is a terrible waste of resources.
Therefore, the world is moving towards a greener future, but it involves many sectors. The transportation sector is a major source of carbon emissions, so is the energy sector. Till the energy sector is fully switched to green alternatives, the takeover of the automotive sector by electric cars is far-fetched.
Plastic Waste
It is no hidden fact that all electric cars are powered by batteries. The batteries are also of different kinds and utilize different types of cells for power generation. Some are Lithium ion batteries while some are lead acid batteries. They all have different working principles and efficiencies, one thing is common in all of them.
That one thing is that all batteries are mostly made up of plastic. Since like every piece of technology they have a limited life, they are discarded after they are no longer of use. Plastic is the wonder chemical that is extremely cheap and is disposable. Plastic items are used and then discarded. This is one of the biggest challenges that humanity faces right now.
Our oceans are full of plastic and the great pacific garbage patch is now bigger than two entire countries combined. This is the biggest drawback of electric cars. There is a huge amount of research being carried out to make biodegradable plastics. But it is not being seen near completion in the next few years. Till then the plastic waste is a huge concern, which stands in the way of electric cars becoming the biggest means of transport.
In-Efficient Battery Power
The electric cars are battery powered. The battery is a good power source, till the time it is charged. When the battery becomes discharged, it remains of no use to the electric car. It cannot propel it to go any further, neither can it have the passengers reach anywhere. These drawbacks of the electric cars are holding them back to fully replace the traditional fossil fuel driven cars.
The batteries of the electric cars are currently inefficient and do not provide the same amount of travel distance that the traditional cars can. There is still development going on in this sector and research is going on. One thing that is certain is that these cars have some time before they will be able to replace the old and traditional powerful cars.
Cost Matters
Although the electric cars seem like a dream. With all their amazing features it seems like one is in a dream. But the price of them is enough to wake up anyone from their dreamy slumber. All the environmentally friendly and green features of the electric cars come with a price tag that is way out of the reach of the common man.
The traditional cars are in themselves the dreams of a lot of people, let alone the dream of buying an insanely expensive electric car. The common man can hardly afford the cars sold by used cars exporter, so it is extremely difficult for them to be able to afford an electric car. The cost of the electric cars is yet another barrier that is hindering it from taking over the market any soon.
It is true that the future of transportation is electric cars, but there is still a considerable amount of time left for this future to arrive. The quest is going on, but in the near future the existing cars are not seen being replaced.
