If you're using Outlook set up with an Office 365 account, you are pretty confident about the security and integrity of your information. However, there are times when you attempt to open your account, you will see an error waiting to be discovered. The message is as follows;

Your mailbox was temporarily moved to Microsoft Exchange. Microsoft Exchange server.


The message will further explain how you can work around this.

  • A temporary mailbox is in existence however it may not contain all your data from before.

  • You can connect to your temporary mailbox, or use offline access to all your old data.

  • If you decide to use the old data, you can't send or receive email messages.

It's a full message that reveals the primary mailer has been relocated to Exchange Server and the temporary mailbox doesn't provide any guarantee that you will get the old information.

It is now impossible working with the temporary mailbox since it won't allow you for sending or receiving email messages. So, you must plan to some troubleshooting steps to pinpoint the issue and eliminate it.

NOTE: It is not recommended to connect to a temporary mailboxes, as it may cause loss of data at some point of time.

Microsoft has provided a few solutions to workarounds that you can use to reconnect your primary email account to Outlook again.

  1. Remove all accounts from Outlook other than the primary account.

  2. Remove the profile of your original account and make a new profile.

  3. Allow cached exchange mode within Outlook.

  4. Change the Windows Registry Key (EnableADAL)


Follow these steps each step by step. Begin with the initial one and if that doesn't succeed, you can try the next one.

  1. Remove all accounts from Outlook with the exception of the primary account:

    1. Get out of Outlook and then go into the Control Panel.

    2. Look up for the mail icon, then double-click it.

    3. Click the Show Profiles button.

    4. When you open the Mail dialog box, choose the account with the primary account, then select to remove it..

      A warning message will inform that the removal of the account will also delete cached content that is offline. Choose "Yes!" and then proceed.

    5. Follow the same four steps to close all accounts with the exception of the primary.

    6. Finally, exit from Control Panel and restart Outlook application.

If Outlook is still showing this error warning, you must use the second troubleshooting technique.

  1. Remove the profile of your original account and create a brand new profile:

    1. Open Control Panel and then search for Mail..

    2. After you open and opening the Mail Dialog box that appears, you must first create a new Outlook Profile and then delete the previous profile.

    3. Choose "Show Profiles" Click Show Profiles, then hit “Add” button.

    4. Follow the step-by-step process to set up a new account using the Add Account Wizard.

    5. Inside the Mail Dialog box Use the drop-down menu and choose the account you want to use and then select the option always use this profile.

    6. Once you've created your account , it is now time to will need to navigate to the Show Profiles tab and choose the account that you previously had. Select the remove button.

    7. The caution message will indicate that when you delete the account the cached offline content will be removed along with it. Make sure to click "OK".

    8. Cancel Control Panel and restart MS Outlook.

  2. Set Cached Exchange Mode:

    1. You must navigate into Control Panel and open Mail option.

    2. Click on the option to access your email account.

    3. Select the account , then select Change.

    4. On the Server Settings page, go to the Offline Settings category and click the checkbox that says 'Utilize Cached Exchange Mode'

    5. The cached exchange mode is enabled on your account.

    6. Start Outlook to then check whether it's opening as expected.

  3. Change the Windows Registry Key (EnableEADL):

    1. Shut down Microsoft Outlook.

    2. Press the Windows & R keys together and select regedit and then click "OK" to start windows registry editor.

    3. Go to the location: HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Identity\

    4. Then, double-click on the EnableEADL button to change it. Then, enter the value in 1. Change the base settings to Hexadecimal.

    5. Similar to that, double click on the Version key, and then alter the same settings - value should be set to 1. Hexadecimal from the Base setting.

    6. Close or quit or exit the registry editor.

    7. Reboot the system, and then launch Outlook.

  4. Other Methods: This method is provided from the Microsoft support team. They should solve the issue through the restarting of Outlook. If these solutions don't work for you, you should consider other methods that might aid you recover of the issue.

  5. Utilizing scanpst.exe: Microsoft Outlook comes with an integrated inbox repair tool which is used for repair and scanning of damaged or corrupted PST that is used to repair corrupted PST files.

This tool can assist you to determine if there's any issue with the mailbox, or if there's an error that indicates the mailbox has been temporarily relocated on an Microsoft Exchange Server, then it can be resolved by using scanpst.exe. Examine the PST default location of the file to make an archive of PST file prior to using ScanPST.exe as the tool may erase some of the data in the mailbox. The restoration of the data that remains could be achieved by using the backup file alone. Although it allows you to access your account, but the deleted data that was deleted at the time or following scanpst.exe won't be able to come back.

  1. However, some third-party programs can impact your account's security, and could cause it to deactivate your account or remove it from Outlook. Select the Add-ins option on the left side and then click on Manage Add-ins. Then, choose the desired add-ins, then select Remove to remove this from your Outlook application.

  1. Enable the anti-virus program: Anti-virus applications save programs on computers from external threats of spyware and malware. Sometimes, these antivirus applications discover a flaw in the data file in your account and hinder Outlook in accessing the account. You can turn off the anti-virus application for a short period of time and try to open your account through Outlook.
